Egypt builds security fence outside Israeli embassy
An Egyptian company is constructing a fence outside a building housing the Israeli embassy in Cairo after recent anti-Israel protests.
The 100-metre-long fence, being installed on a bridge near the Nile, is aimed at protecting residents of the building from threats such as petrol bombs, according to an official in the company.
The fence is being constructed upon orders from the army, sid the official on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.
Late last month, hundreds of Egyptians, outraged by Israel’s killing of five Egyptian policemen near the border, tore down a fence outside the embassy and demanded the Israeli ambassador to Cairo be expelled.
Earlier this week, the Israeli flag was hoisted again outside the embassy days after an Egyptian protester removed it. The border killings triggered a crisis between Egypt and Israel, the worst since they signed a peace treaty in 1979.
